I had the opportunity to sit down with PuffCast podcast hosts Julianna and Melanie and answer the following questions from the ultimate Harry Potter tag. Check out our answers down below and feel free to leave your responses in the comments!
1. Favourite book?
Stacey: Without a doubt ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’. From Ron and Hermione’s relationship evolving, Hinny becoming canon, Draco being a major focus of the storyline and finally being able to learn about Voldemort’s past, there’s nothing I dislike about this novel!
Julianna: My default answer is Chamber of Secrets since it’s the book that got me into the series and the first movie I watched too (on VHS and a LOT). But I love resolution and connecting all the dots, so I also love Deathly Hallows. Plus DH always makes me cry when Dobby dies and that holds a sad but special place in my heart because I love Dobby.
Melanie: It’s always really hard for me to decide. I love the story as a whole. All books have their exciting and maybe less good parts. If i would really have to choose then i would say books 1 and 7. The beginning of Harry discovering the magical world and learning that he is in fact a very important person, despite what the Dursley’s tried to make him believe. And the last, cause we get to the closing of this fantastic adventure, that thought us all about love and friendship and that evil has no chance against that!
2. Least favourite book?
Stacey: My least favourite has to be ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’, although I’ve warmed up to it considerably since reading it previous times. I understand the reasons for Harry’s behaviour but angsty Harry just isn’t my favourite and so it makes reading what is already the longest HP book a bit of a challenge.
Julianna: By far is Sorcerer’s Stone. That book is 100% for kids and even as a kid I didn’t readt it till after I read all the other books. I just watched the movie since I found it too boring and in my defense the movie is pretty darn close to the book. I fnd SS moves too slow for me and I’m not huge on world building plots
Melanie: Again, I just can’t choose. It’s impossible. So, maybe I would pick a classic scene that’s somewhat nonsense … Goblet of Fire, the task in the lake. When the whole school stands at the lake and stares for an hour at it without much happening. Just the thought of how that must have been like. 😀
3. Favourite movie?
Stacey: Okay, so my answer to this question changes because I go through phases where each one in turn is my favourite. I recently had a Harry Potter movie marathon and since then have declared that my favourite movie is: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! Harry in that movie is spot-on and not to mention the movie itself is just aesthetically pleasing to watch with all the nature shots!
Julianna: This definitely would change for me based on what I want to watch. Again, COS holds the most special place in my heart and I can recite that movie word for word since it was the one VHS my mom bought me one summer and I just chose to rewatch it a million times. Other than that, POA always makes me laugh and I really love the later movies too since the acting gets better the older they get.
Melanie: Same as with the books, i cant pick favorites or least favorites. I like watching through all of them occasionally and try to not focus on the parts that are different from the original story or even entirely missing.
4. Least favourite movie?
Stacey: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1’. I don’t do well when it comes to the first part of any 2 part films, for other examples: Hunger Games’s ‘Mockingjay’ and Twilight’s ‘Breaking Dawn’. . . Deathly Hallows Part 1 just feels like a filler movie to me prior to the epicness of Part 2, though I do still enjoy watching the movie!
Julianna: One word: HAIR. Movie 4 makes my stomach turn, I can’t watch it without wanting to cut all that hair the ENTIRE movie. Also the whole Crouch Jr at the beginning, no winky and a million other things they left out make me upset. I don’t hate it as a movie, but as a “Harry Potter movie” I do.
Melanie: See answer above. Im not a fan of how they made Ron look like a dummy at all times and gave all his good lines to Hermione.
5. Favourite quote?
Stacey: ‘Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?‘ – Albus Dumbledore: Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) by J.K. Rowling.
Julianna: I’m going to pick two like Mel and I really like the one she mentioned: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Also this gem from Dumbledore: “I was merely reading the Muggle magazines,’ said Dumbledore. ‘I do love knitting patterns. “
Melanie: Oooh, too many! All the wise things Dumbledore has ever said. Probably most accurate to what i try to live by is this one: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Also very me …
“One can never have enough socks.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
6. Favourite Weasley?
Stacey: Ron Weasley. A lot of people dislike his character for his flaws and insecurities but I actually love him for these reasons. Yes, he’s mean to Hermione and can be cruel and a bit annoying at times due to these aspects of his personality but it’s what makes him all the more human and relatable. I agree with JK when it comes to Ron that he is a ‘very real boy’ in comparison to Harry the hero/idol.
Julianna: Fed and George by far. They are so funny and also clever. It’s clear that they are BRILLIANT wizards but school just isn’t their jam. As someone who has dyslexia and has a different learning style, I really identify with this aspect of them. Also I feel like they are just so much fun, who wouldn’t want to be around them?
Melanie: Fred and George, for being silly and fun and for simply having the courage to go their way as they see fit best. That’s what i did when i moved to a whole new country and started a new life there. Ginny comes close after her twin brothers, for also being headstrong and standing up for herself and kicking butt in the meantime.
7. Favourite female character?
Stacey: Ginny Weasley. As much as I do have things in common with Hermione, it is Ginny who is my favourite character and who I relate to the most – especially when it comes to her devotion and love for Harry and how that evolves. Additionally, I like that she isn’t a part of the main group and so it makes me crave the moments with her in them even more.
Julianna: Luna. She is so unafraid to be herself. She is brave and strong in subtle ways and also in big ways. I just really respect and envy her ability to just be her and not give it a second thought. She is what I strive to be like in life, not rude but just me.
Melanie: Luna. She sees the world with different eyes. She is open to new and strange things. She looks at everything in wonder and is very honest. She also is a true friend and unafraid of just being herself. I love that about her so much and I see myself in her in so many ways. She shows us that all is going to be ok in the end. We should all try to be more like her.
8. Favourite villain?
Stacey: I would say Voldemort and a part of me really wants to but in all honesty I have to say Umbridge. Why? Because Voldemort is someone who we know from the moment he is mentioned to be evil whilst Dolores on the other hand attempts to fool us and others with all the pink and kitten love… That’s more cunning and therefore makes her my favourite villain. Voldemort, I love to hate. Umbridge, I just hate and THAT’S what a villain should be from my POV.
Julianna: Umbridge. She is that kind of evil that gets under your skin and you cant get it out no matter what you do. She makes me so mad and that means JKR did her job. Its upsetting because what makes Umbridge evil isn’t magic, its her mind and I know real-life Umbridges and they are scary too! (*cough* Trump *cough*)
Melanie: Mh, i had to think a little about this. Voldemort is a classic villain but it’s the unusual ones that you wouldn’t expect to be evil that I find more interesting. Umbridge is one of those that we all have had in our actual life. A hidden one like Snape or Barty Crouch Jr. on the other hand is more complex and makes you appreciate their cleverness. So, even though he turns out to be on the good side in the end, I say Snape.
9. Favourite male character?
Stacey: Draco Malfoy, if we’re talking about the HP series from books 1-7 (movies: 1-8) BUT I think it’s about time we start including Cursed Child into the mix because shoutout to all those who loved the script/play and consider it canon. . . So, SCORPIUS MALFOY. He’s my favourite character also.
Julianna: Dumbledore, again he’s my favorite character overall, but for me hes the perfect combination of flawed, funny and smart.
Melanie: Dobby. Crazy and cute. He does not always have the greatest ideas on how to help Harry but he is brave and courageous! He saves everyone’s life cause it’s the right thing to do. He was the hardest death for me to read. My bunny is named after him.
10. Favourite professor?
Stacey: I used to answer this question by saying Professor Lupin but that answer has changed recently to Professor McGonagall! She’s a total badass and it wasn’t until my latest movie marathon and the current re-read of the novels that I realised just how much.
Julianna: McGonagall, she is kicking ass and taking names. She is such a role model as a strong woman, She stands up for her for her friends and students with all the bravery a gryffindor could wish to have.
Melanie: Prof. Sprout. No doubt. I’m a Hufflepuff after all and she seems like a sweet and warm person. I would love to have tea with her and chat all night about plants and their magical abilities!
11. Wash Snape’s hair, or spend a day listening to Lockhart rant about himself?
Stacey: So I’ve just stared at the laptop screen for about ten minutes trying to decide which one I would rather do. . . Washing Snape’s hair would (I’m assuming) not take long to do but he may protest and hex me. Listening to Lockhart on the other hand, for an entire day? I don’t think I could manage it so I’ll risk being hexed by Snape and pray that my being a Slytherin makes it less likely to happen.
Julianna: For me it comes down to the time commitment. I think I could do both, but Snape’s hair would take way less time and if I can wear gloves I’m in!
Melanie: I much rather listen to Lockhart. I easily get along with just anybody and if someone like him keeps going on and on, well … I am also easily able to just switch that talk off. Maybe I would bring some tea and cake, something to crochet. That will pass the time rather nicely.
12. Duel an elated Bellatrix, or an angry Molly?
Stacey: I’d rather duel an angry Molly. To be fair, I’m thinking of the duel between them in Deathly Hallows and how an elated Bellatrix would most likely torture you to death and I wouldn’t be able to cope with that. Angry Molly, please!
Julianna: Angry Molly, Molly wouldnt try an torture me and I feel like I have a better chance of reasoning with Molly than Bellatrix.
Melanie: Angry Molly. I would be able to talk her down and fix whatever made us end up duelling each other. Also, Mothers love me. Ha!
13. Travel to Hogwarts via Hogwarts Express or a flying car?
Stacey: HOGWARTS EXPRESS! Yes, please! I was supposed to go on the Hogwarts Express this year as part of my birthday present from last year (my birthday is in December). However, thanks to COVID-19, that didn’t happen so here’s hoping we (my Nan and I) can go next year. . .
Julianna: 100% the Express, I’d love to spend time with my friends before school. Plus you can get up and move around which is clutch for me as someone with ADD.
Melanie: I have been sitting in both (at the Studio Tour in London) and I would choose the Hogwarts express. Why? Because the Puff in me sees a huge advantage in being delivered treats and snacks by the Trolly Lady. She got all the good stuff!
14. Kiss Voldemort, or give Umbridge a bubble bath?
Stacey: Kiss Voldemort. Yes, I’d rather do that than give Umbridge a bubble bath. After kissing Voldemort, he’d most likely kill me so that’d be something because if I gave Umbridge a bubble bath, I’d want someone to kill me anyway!
Julianna: Kiss Voldemort. Even with a speech I know he’d give, it would be less time consuming plus I’ve kissed snakes disguised as men before haha.
Melanie: I would prepare a bubble bath for Umbridge. And maybe I would slip a sort of potion into her bathwater, that would make her nice. Permanently. Just let me get back to finishing up that formular first.
15. Ride a Hippogriff, or ride a Firebolt?
Stacey: My question is: What are the loyalty levels of a Hippogriff and Firebolt? If I fell off, would either come to my aid before I fell? I’m going to choose Firebolt because I can at least Accio it toward me and hope for the best if I slide off.
Julianna: Probably a broom. I’m ok with animals but Hippogriffs seem kinda testy and I’d rather be fully in control of my ride.
Melanie: I’m not a fan of heights. A Hippogriff seems more stable to me and I’m good with animals. I think that would be my choice, if I would have no other means of travel available and it’s an emergency.
16. Is there a character you felt differently about in the movies versus the books?
Stacey: Ginny Weasley! Because the movies did her no justice! I love Bonnie Wright as the choice for Ginny Weasley but her character was barely touched upon until the sixth movie and seemingly only for the sixth movie because in the seventh there was not a single mention of her until Ron mentioned her name in the tent. . .
Julianna: Probably Ginny, I just feel like she was non-existent in the movies. She has so much more to her that we never get to see.
Melanie: Ron. He is made to look like the silly sidekick that’s just there for comic relief. When in fact he is pretty smart and logical, especially the older he gets, and truly the bestest friend to Harry.
17. Is there a movie you preferred over its book?
Stacey: To be honest? No. I love all the movies and books but in comparison the books are so much better. It just so happens that it is easier to re-watch the movies more times than it is to re-read the books. . .
Julianna: Nope. Books over movies 100%.
Melanie: Definite No. They are nice to watch but i’m a perfectionist and there is just way too much wrong with the movies or entirely missing. Books over movies, always.
18. Richard Harris or Michael Gambon as Dumbledore?
Stacey: A lot of people will not like me for the answer I’m about to give. . . Michael Gambon. He is my Dumbledore although Richard Harris was amazing in the first two movies. I can’t remember those as well though as I was about 4-6 years old when those two were released so I basically grew up with Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. One time he failed though was in GOF. . . ‘HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE?!’ . . . Dumbledore said, calmly? XD
Julianna: Honestly, I’m weird and I don’t really care that much. I think I just accept that the first guy died so we have the second guy, plus I’m like a 80% books only 20% movies person so the same guy plays Dumbledore the whole time in my head haha
Melanie: The debate that splits the fandom. Probably for iternatity. I love both. I think Michael Gambon brought the needed “action” to the film though, when it was needed in the later parts of the story. I do agree that the Goblet scene is not great but i also always think of the fact that he himself did not read the actual stories, only the script and probably did mostly what he was directed to do.
19. Your top thing (person or event) which wasn’t included in the movie that annoyed you the most?
Stacey: Aside from Draco running between Harry and Voldemort to throw Harry his wand? The entire Marauders backstory from POA.
Julianna: Marauders, the gaunt storyline, a lot of the Ron quidditch moments, and THE WAY DUMBLEDORE’S FUNERAL WAS SHORTED!!! Thart scene in the book is amazing and just lack-luster in the movie.
Melanie: Where to begin!? Marauders. Winky. The Gaunts. Peeves!! Plus so many moments missing from the books that would have made you understand the storyline better, if you’re a casual fan that only watched the movies. Dumbledore’s death was also wrapped up super quickly. Why didn’t we get his funeral? I felt quite cheated.
20. If you could remake any of the Potter movies, which would it be?
Stacey: I’d remake POA – even if it is my favourite movie, there’s so many book things I’d love to add to it: Ginny’s reactions to the Dementors, Draco encouraging Harry to look for Sirius and the Marauder’s backstory!
Julianna: GoF and just cut their hair and it gets 1000 times better, and also take out the Barty Crouch Jr thing at the beginning.
Melanie: All of them. See answer to Question 19! 😀
21. Which house was your first gut feeling you’d be a part of?
Stacey: Slytherin – I always knew though a small part of me considered the possibility that I may be sorted into Ravenclaw also. . .
Julianna: Ravenclaw, i was nerdy, quiet and BLUE IS THE BEST COLOR!
Melanie: None, to be honest. I had no idea where I would belong because we didn’t even have enough information on Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff to have a proper base to make such a decision.
22. Which house were you actually sorted into on Pottermore?
Stacey: Slytherin – and I answered the questions honestly because when I was sorted I didn’t know that rigging it was possible to achieve the house you wanted. I was just lucky enough to be sorted into the house I wanted.
Julianna: Hufflepuff x3 (I retook it for fun) but I did get Gryfferyn on a random buzzfeed quiz. I am 1000% a secondary Slytherin though and Mel know that shows a lot sometimes (like 75% Puff, 25% Snake)
Melanie: Hufflepuff. And every single random test i have taken since is always sorting me into Hufflepuff too. It’s absolutely my home! There is zero doubt in my mind and I also have no hybrid house, as for so many others.
23. Which class would be your favorite?
Stacey: Defence Against The Dark Arts or Care Of Magical Creatures, most definitely! Although, dare I say it, not with Hagrid as the teacher for the latter. . . Someone like Newt Scamander, or just Newt Scamander, yes please!
Julianna: Potions as long as Snape’s not teaching it. I love to do hands on things that are creative and pretty to look at.
Melanie: Care of Magical Creatures! Absolutely. And if there were Magical Cooking classes, i would take all of those too. The closest to that would probably be Potions. I think I would quite enjoy that as well. If only i could veganize the potion ingredients though.
24. Which spell do you think would be most useful to learn?
Stacey: My Slytherin side is going to show. . . Imperio. Ya’ll know what it does so my answer really just speaks for itself.
Julianna: Apparition and accio, I can get places or bring things to me.
Melanie: Generally speaking, cooking charms and those that help in everyday life to finish household chores.
25. Which character do you think you’d instantly become best friends with?
Stacey: Luna Lovegood. She’s so eccentric and a misfit like myself so we’d get along perfectly!
Julianna: Luna, my confidence in making new friends sometimes isn’t high and I tend to gravitate towards “weirdos” since I am one of those weirdos. Also I LOVE people who are unafraid to be themselves, it’s infectious.
Melanie: Luna and Neville. I have never been a cool kid and don’t like being the center of attention. Luna and Neville are much more my kind of people. Calm, nice and good friends to surround yourself with, that take you into their circle just the way you are.
26. If you could own one of the three Hallows, which would it be?
Stacey: I feel like this question is all that’s needed for some Wizarding personality test. There’s definitely psychology students out there ready to psycho-analyse me so here goes. . . The Elder Wand!
Julianna: Wait, where did my cloak go?! MEL!!!! Ugh, not again!
Melanie: I own all three of them. So … I guess that makes me the Master of Death. Beware.
27. Is there any aspect of the books you’d want to change?
Stacey: Oh, the books?! I would make it so that Neville and Luna got together – something I discussed recently with MuggleNet author, Irvin Khaytman.
Julianna: probably just how cheesy the end of book 7 is and what Harry names Albus, I feel like JKR was so over writing when she got to this point.
Melanie: No. I dont see the point. Undoing deaths, sure. Maybe some things here and there where Harry acts stupid. But then again, the story would have less of an impact and would feel less real.
28. Favorite Marauder?
Stacey: James Potter! Many dislike James and whilst I understand why, I have never been able to dislike him at all. He is my favourite Marauder and the most intriguing to me.
Julianna: Remus, he is a genuine person and not full of himself like the others or just so pitiful like Peter.
Melanie: Remus. He is the most honest and kind. Most trustworthy too. I don’t like being around people that are false (Peter) or bullies (James and Sirius).
29. If you could bring one character back to life, which would it be?
Stacey: Fred Weasley. Without a doubt. I can’t stand the idea of George having lost his twin. . .
Julianna: Dobby, reading his death makes me cry the most every time. All he wanted to do was help and share his form of love with Harry.
Melanie: Voldemort. … Just kidding! Dobby. He is always the first that comes to mind. As mentioned before, his death has hit me the hardest. Although many have died that were great characters and none of them deserved to die of course.
30. Hallows or Horcruxes?
Stacey: The Horcruxes and just for fun, I’d make 7 also (because 7 is my favourite number) and here is what they’d be: (1) The Bracelet given to me by my Nan which was once hers; (2) My Kitten Weasley; (3) A Copy of Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince; (4) My Triskele Necklace; (5) A rock I took from Jersey’s beach (Channel Island Jersey, NOT New Jersey); (6) My Niffler keychain and (7) My mobile phone. All of these things hold sentimental value or some sort of value to me!
Julianna: hallows, I don’t think I could ever kill anyone (check in with me if Trump gets re-elected though) so Hallows it is.
Melanie: Horcruxes are just pure evil. I would never create any! I would choose the Hallows. They can be used for good, even though they seem to have a dark past.
